Lip piercings are a popular choice to emphasize your personal style. For thousands of years, lip piercings have been used in various cultures as a form of self-expression, status or ritual.
What is a lip piercing?
A lip piercing is a piercing that is placed through the lip or around the mouth. There are different types of lip piercings, depending on the placement. The most common are the labret (a piercing under the lower lip), monroe (a piercing on the side of the upper lip), philtrum/medusa (a piercing in the dimple above the upper lip) and snake bites (two piercings, one on each side of the lower lip). Many creative combinations are also possible here, such as multiple piercings around the lips or asymmetrical styles.
Lip piercings
Jewelry for lip piercings varies depending on the placement and your personal preference. Usually, lip piercings are set with a labret, a straight rod with a flat back. Of these, the front can be a ball, a stone setting or some other type of end. Rings are also popular for lip piercings, but these can only be worn after complete healing.
The best materials
It is important to wear only high-quality materials in your lip piercing, such as implantable titanium or solid gold. This minimizes the risk of irritation and allergies. As with other piercings, the lip piercing is initially set with a longer piece of jewelry to allow room for swelling. After the swelling subsides, it is important to have the jewelry replaced with a shorter, better-fitting one to promote healing.

How do I care for my lip piercing?
A new lip piercing needs attention to heal properly. Rinse your mouth regularly with water after eating or drinking, and avoid smoking, spicy food and alcohol during the healing period. It is also important not to move or play with your jewelry unnecessarily. After swelling, you can have your jewelry downsized to prevent irritation. Also, do not wear makeup on or around your healing piercing.
